Bottom Line
“Longlegs”, starring Maika Monroe, Blair Underwood and Nicolas Cage, comes close to the hype surrounding it, but not quite. It wants to be the next “Silence of the Lambs” but doesn’t attain those heights. It does, however, achieve a bizarre, unsettling and dare I say, “Satanic” atmosphere that genuinely disturbs the viewer, as well as solid and gritty performances by Monroe as the young female FBI Agent protagonist Lee Harker, Underwood as her supervisor, Agent Carter, and Cage as the serial killer, Longlegs.
The plot draws the audience in quickly and effectively when we actually see the very creepy and disturbing Longlegs in the opening scene. The mystery that ensues is unique as far as I am aware in the annals of film. It is somewhat of a circular maze that winds back upon itself to the beginning at its end. Several families ober the years have been killed in a murder suicide committed by the father. However, a letter with cryptic symbols and signed “LONGLEGS” is always found at the crime scene.
